Co-created by Sam Stourdzé, the director of famous international photo festival Rencontres d’Arles (France), and Chinese photographer RongRong (also the founder of Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, China’s first ever professional art center dedicated to photography), Jimei x Arles features international artists selected from Rencontres d’Arles alongside Chinese and Asian photography talents. The festival has attracted more than 240,000 visitors since its inception in 2015. Jimei x Arles is co-organized by Three Shadows Photography Art Centre and Xiamen Xiamen Tianxia Jimei Media Co., Ltd. 

Bérénice Angremy and Victoria Jonathan are the art directors of the 2019 edition, held in Xiamen from November 22, 2019, to January 5, 2020 (dates TBC).

CALL FOR PROJECTS!

Jimei x Arles features around 30 exhibitions arranged in different sections: exhibitions from Rencontres d’Arles, China Pulse, Crossover Photography, Jimei x Arles Discovery Award, Collector’s Tale, Local Action, Project Room and a special focus on an Asian country.

In 2019, Jimei x Arles is launching a call for curatorial projects for its China Pulse and Crossover Photography sections. It is open to all exhibition curators specialized in Chinese photography.

China Pulse is a series of exhibitions curated by China photography specialists. It aims at taking the pulse of current trends in Chinese photography. 

Whether collective or individual, the exhibition project shall refer to the photography medium in its diversity of forms (print, digital, video…).

Crossover Photography section invites curators to show the possibilities of photography on different media (print, video, digital, objects…) and in crossing cultural contexts. The project can be a collective or individual exhibition.

 Each exhibition has a maximum space of 150-200 square meters, located in the main festival venue (Jimei Citizen Square Exhibition Hall). 

 Additionally, Jimei x Arles festival will cover travel expenses within China for the curator and one of the artists participating in the exhibition to attend the festival’s opening on November 22-24.

The chosen projects will be part of the 2019 festival exhibition program (November 22 to January 5).

RULES OF PARTICIPATION

1 — PURPOSE
The Jimei x Arles call for curatorial projects is intended for curators wishing to produce an unprecedented exhibition project with a relationship to Chinese photography.The exhibition must premiere at Jimei x Arles 2019.


2 — APPLICATION
If you are interested in participating in the call for projects, please send us an email (menyi@doors-agency.com) ahead of your application to receive all details.
 The application must be submitted in online forms (You can get access to online form by long pressing the following QR codes) and include the following, in Mandarin or English (ideally both):

> a biography of the curator
(maximum 150 words in English, or 250 characters in Mandarin, ideally in both languages, in Word) complete with training, research and contact details

> a portfolio
(pdf) of various projects the curator has carried out

> a written text presentation of the exhibition project proposed for the 2019 Jimei x Arles festival
(maximum 500 words in English, or 800 characters in Mandarin, ideally in both languages, in Word or PPT)

> a body of works and a list of the artists for the project
(visuals are mandatory, word or ppt)

> an estimated exhibition production budget

> a timetable

The texts must be in Mandarin or English, ideally both.

 The application deadline is March 10, 2019.

The selected projects will be announced on March 29, 2019.

If the project is not approved, no compensation will be provided.

3 — PRODUCTION
The exhibition project will be submitted to the Jimei x Arles team for approval. If approved, the project will enter the production stage, supervised by Jimei x Arles.

> The budget, managed by Jimei x Arles, shall include:

  • loan of works

  • round-trip shipping to Jimei  

  • production of the works: prints/frames, wallpaper, etc.

  • insurance

  • other expenses TBD

The festival will also cover travel expenses for the curator and one of the artists on the festival’s opening weekend on November 22-24(mainland China round-trip ticket to Xiamen + accommodation). The curator will arrive a few days ahead to supervise the exhibition’s installation during the set-up period.

In addition, Jimei x Arles will cover the costs of designing, setting up and taking down the exhibition as well as providing security.

> The curator will:
-select the works forming the body of the exhibition after confirming that they are free of exhibition and reproduction rights, and send technical sheet with full production requirements (type of photo paper, color of the walls, lighting, equipment, etc), before May 13, 2019

- draft a text for the exhibition

- be present during the exhibition’s setup period (length of stay to be determined depending on the project, between November 11 and 22) to coordinate the installation in relation with the festival’s production team

- attend the festival’s opening weekend (November 22-24)and participate in events and activities (guided tour of the exhibition, talks, interviews…).

4 — COMMUNICATION

If approved, the project will be part of the 2019 Jimei x Arles program, and as such will be included in the festival’s communication (website, catalogue, social media, etc.).

 To ensure good communication on the exhibition, the curator shall provide before May 13,2019the festival with :

  • the title of the exhibition 

  • a text introducing the exhibition, in both long version(maximum 400 words in English, or 600 characters in Mandarin, ideally in both languages), made for the exhibition space and catalogue, and short version made for digital promotion (maximum 150 words in English, or 250 characters in Mandarin, ideally in both languages)

  • 15 photos free of reproduction rights for the catalogue in high resolution (350 dpi, 25cm height minimum) and for digital use in low resolution (72 dpi), of which 5 photos will be selected for the press and digital promotion

  • captions for the photos (in Mandarin or English, ideally both) : title, location year, technical details, courtesy…

  • the curator’s biography(maximum 150 words in English, or 250 characters in Mandarin, ideally in both languages)including the mentions « Born in… in… » and « Works and lives in… », and links to their website and Instagram account

  • the artist(s)’s biography  (maximum 150 words in English, or 250 characters in Mandarin, ideally in both languages)including the mentions « Born in… in… » and « Works and lives in… », and links to their website and Instagram account/weibo

  • the curator’s photo portrait in low resolution (72 dpi) and high resolution (300 dpi - size 30x20 cm), for print and digital use, with photo credit

  • the artist(s)’s photo portrait in low resolution (72 dpi) and high resolution (300 dpi - size 30x20 cm),for print and digital use, with photo credit

  • partners or institutions that must be mentioned
