This great master of Italian photography was born in 1925 into a poor family in Senigallia, a small town on the Adriatic coast, where he spent all his life. Mario Giacomelli began painting as a teenager. He started working in a printer’s plant when he was thirteen. Only in 1952 did he buy himself a cheap camera. He used it like a painter to create high-contrast, near-abstract landscapes. From that moment onwards he devoted his life to the creation of his intense photographic series: life in the hospice, landscapes, Scanno, rural life. In 1955 he started to be acknowledged by the photography world and began to exhibit his work. His images are part of the most important art collections worldwide.
